Holy Cannoli the County Fair Food is Delicious!

"Let's Eat, Have Fun & Celebrate the Red, White & Blue"

By Rebecca Johnson May 24, 2018

The Sacramento County Fair is back at Cal Expo for another memorable Memorial Day Weekend, May 24-28, 2018!  I (along with neighboring MacKid Publishers, bloggers and news / media outlets) got a sneak peek at the Fair tonight!  We tried some new fair foods, and got behind the scenes details of what we can all expect from this family friendly event.

Midway of Fun is back this year, hosting the carnival. We were able to meet the "man who makes the magic happen," Tim, as he told us about a very special Make A Wish Carnival they put on today, for one very happy recipient! Terrell Watts, is a young cancer survivor who's wish was to have his own Carnival! What kid doesn't want their OWN carnival for the day? We was CEO and captain of fun, as the Cal Expo grounds turned his dream into reality! It was very cool to hear how so many came together to make his dream a reality! "Let's Eat, Have Fun & Celebrate the Red, White & Blue" is this year's fair theme! There is so much to do at the county fair, you may need more than one day to see it all! From free shows, to grandstand entertainment(*some events require an additional ticket to enter), to the amazing food, animal auctions, and music- there is something for everyone!

See the entertainment schedule here

There is also a free train that will take you from stop to stop around the fair grounds! This is awesome for the days when it's hot, or your feet just need a break!

Now, let's talk food! Some new things on the menus this year: Cookies and Cream Funnel Cake, garlic shrimp, Pastrami Sandwhich's from "Grinders", and Corn covered in Flamin' hot Cheetos!

On the savory side, I loved the Western Bacon hot dog with bacon and jalepenos from Hot Doggin'. There is a new vegetarian option as well, that was delicious- a grilled veggie panini!

But you know, when we think fair food, we think deep fried. We think Sweet. This year, the sweet category won me over with their delicious choices! From edible cookie dough, to mini donuts (my personal fave- with chocolate or caramel dipping sauce), cookies, and a DEEP FRIED CANNOLI!  Now, I have to say, the Cannoli was my favorite before the donuts arrived.  It was sweet, sort of like a twinkie- with the creamy middle- with chocolate and of course covered in  the famous dipping batter, deep fried and topped with powdered sugar. Seriously, save some room and let your sweet tooth direct you!
