Creating Birthday Party Traditions

By Macaroni Kid Roseville-Rocklin-Lincoln March 18, 2019

The birth of your child is a special day.
Show them how special it is with birthday traditions that will create memories to last their lifetime.

Birthday Party Traditions are a great way to make your child's day special and memorable. There are so many things you could do,  but here are a few ideas to get you started if you don't have any traditions you do already. Remember, you want to start a tradition, so this will be something you do every year, so don't go too overboard or you may not be able to keep it up for years. Pick one, or just a few that you know you can do easily each year. If you have some birthday traditions of your own, I'd love to hear about them!

Special Wake up Decorations

Put balloons in their room. Take streamers and take them to the door frame, so they have to "break through" to get out of the room. Make a Happy Birthday Banner.

Birthday Breakfast

Start the day with a special breakfast. It can be something you make that you know they love and serve it to them in bed. You could go out to breakfast at their favorite spot. You could also try a fun new birthday breakfast treat. Here are a few ideas:

  • Make shaped pancakes in their name or numbers (how old they are)
  • Use a funfetti cake mix to make funfetti pancakes or waffles
  • Get their favorite donuts, stack into a pyramid shape, and add some candles
  • Arrange a package of cinnamon rolls in shape of number (age), and bake in the oven. After adding the glaze, sprinkle with cake sprinkles

Remember sprinkles can turn any breakfast into a special birthday treat!

The Birthday Cake

Find out what your child's favorite cake is. Make it every year. If it's a basic cake, you can make it special by adding decorations or making it into a special shape/theme. Pinterest is filled with ideas. I know some of them look pretty intimidating to make, but there are some easier ones out them. Fondant allows you to create all sorts of things, and it's really not difficult to make.

Keep Track of Them, and Their Birthdays

How so you ask? Measure their height every year on their birthday to show how much they grew each year. Take a photo of them in the same spot (or same pose) each year. You could have a special "props" in the photo each year to show how much they have grown (in comparison to that object), such as a special stuffed animal (you will have to be sure not to throw this one away as they get older). If they have a party, take plenty of photos, and be sure and get a photo of the party room with decorations before the guests arrive.

Do a Birthday Interview

Come up with some simple questions you ask every year, and record their answers so you can see how much they change over the years. You can either take a video of them answering the questions or record them on a paper and put that paper into a special birthday memory album. Here are some questions you could ask:

  • What is your favorite color?
  • What is your favorite animal?
  • What is your favorite food?
  • What job would you like to have when you grow up?
  • What is the best thing about you?
  • Where is your favorite place to hang out?
  • If you could do anything right now, what would you do?
  • What would you buy with $1,000?
  • What was the best thing that happened this past year?
  • Who is your best friend?

Have a Scavenger Hunt to Find a Birthday Present

Pick a small present and hide it somewhere in the house. Write up clues that take them to various places around the house, with each clue leading them to another place with a clue.
