Bicycle Safety Laws in California

By Marisela Morales, Macaroni Kid Folsom - El Dorado Hills Publisher February 20, 2019

We are over a month into the new year, but if you are anything like me you might just be getting over the 2018 end of the year hangover.  If that's the case, you may have just missed the memo about the new California state law affecting bicyclists.

Note, minors under 18 years of age caught riding a bike, scooter, skateboard, or skates without a helmet will receive a citation.  They will have 120 days to take a safety class and demonstrate ownership of a helmet in order to clear the ticket and not pay a fine.

Also, bicyclists involved in an accident where an individual is hurt or dies must stay on the scene and call 9-1-1 to avoid hit-and-run charges.  This certainly sounds like common sense, but perhaps we all need a reminder that an accident is an accident no matter what the mode of transportation is.

As the weather warms up and becomes more cycling friendly, please remember to stay safe on the roads and trails.
