Celebrate Read Across America on March 2nd

Activities and snacks to pair with some Dr. Seuss favorites

By Christel M. Hoydic ~ Macaroni Kid Middleown February 26, 2020

Read Across America Day is celebrated nationwide on March 2nd, Dr. Seuss's birthday, to bring awareness to the importance of reading and to create an occasion to motivate readers of all ages to pick up a book! Use this celebration to start a new routine, get back into the habit or continue to read together every day.

Dr. Seuss books are a fun way to introduce and encourage reading. Pair each book with an activity and snack and you'll encourage conversations, spend time together, expand the knowledge, and create a love of reading!

Here are examples using two Dr. Seuss titles.
Hop on Pop

After reading HOP ON POP get up and HOP - hopscotch, that is! If you can't get outside, create your own version of indoor hopscotch with some painter's tape on the kitchen floor or in the hallway. Then take a break with a little POP corn!

Go Dog Go

Get out that painter's tape again and create an indoor city to drive your big and little cars on! Stop Light Snacks go perfectly with this Dr. Seuss classic - graham crackers, Nutella, and M&M's...YUM!

And a few more ideas:

After reading The Tooth Book, kids of all ages can express their artistic side with a little laugh when they are given the opportunity to paint with a TOOTHBRUSH!

Reading Green Eggs and Ham always leads to the question: Would you like Green Eggs and Ham? So why not find out! Add a few drops of green food coloring to scrambled eggs, a little ham and try it out for yourself.

Use your imagination and see what other activity and snack ideas you can come up with for YOUR favorite Dr. Seuss books!
