Fruit Water

By Melinda L. Willis July 15, 2020

This recipe is so incredibly easy, you may already make it, or you'll think as I did, "why haven't I done this before?" This recipe is a staple in my friend Maria's Mexican household. She has explained to me that it is made often in her household, as well as in many Mexican eateries and roadside stands. After showing interest, (as I do with all the great food and drinks she introduces me to), she surprised me with a basketful of fresh fruit drinks to try! I was thrilled and made fast work of pouring and tasting every single one she brought. In my basket of drinks were the following: papaya, mango, watermelon, cantaloupe, papaya/mango, and hibiscus flower. Yes, hibiscus! This one tasted the most exotic, and it is admittedly one that I have not tried in my own household.

As you'll see, the recipe is only fruit, water, and sugar, so it is as simple as can be! Experiment with the 'leftover' fruit in your house. I have made versions of this drink several times since she has told me about it, and it has been refreshing and delicious each time. I love that it is nutritious and a fresh change from pouring something from a store-bought container. You can mimic the below recipe with almost any fruit.  Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 watermelon seeded and diced
  • 3/4 cup sugar (or adjust to your taste)
  • 6 cups of water

Instructions
You can take the watermelon down much closer to the rind than you usually may. Add watermelon, water, and sugar to the blender. Blend down to water consistency, and serve in an ice-filled glass. Delicious!

If you put it in a sippy cup or similar for your kids, remember that there are no preservatives, so don’t keep it out too long without refrigeration!
