Date Night Idea: Sacramento Broadway

By Macaroni Kid Roseville-Rocklin-Lincoln July 9, 2019

Last night I had the opportunity, as part of the Broadway Sacramento Ambassador program, to head to Music Circus and see the dress rehearsal of the play The Drowsy Chaperone and it was so much fun! I've gone to a few plays recently, but this was the first time I had been to the Music Circus in over 20 years. When I went last time it was still in a tent. Now it is in The Wells Fargo Pavilion, which is much more comfortable, but still is "in the round", which means there is no bad seat in the place.

We met 90 other local influencers before the show for a pre-show party. Downtown & Vine provided wine for all to enjoy, plus we had some other snacks while we heard more about Broadway Sacramento. Before the show started we were told that since it was a dress rehearsal they might still be working out some things, so I kind of expected there to be a few mishaps. I didn't read up on the show beforehand, so I really didn't know what it would be about. The only clue I had was the graphics, which led me to believe it was set in the early 1900s.

After watching the show, all I can say is wow (well, not all I can say, but I was so impressed)! It was such a fun show. We sat 3 rows back, but because of the layout, with the stage in the middle of the circle, it wouldn't have mattered where we sat. It has a very intimate feeling, and even those in the back rows are not that far from the stage.

The Drowsy Chaperone is a parody of musical comedies from the 1920s. It has a "story within a story", with the main character, the man in the chair, who loves Broadway musicals telling us about his favorite, The Drowsy Chaperone. As he is talking about it, the story comes to life. The actors are wonderful, and their voices beautiful. I didn't know it before seeing the show, but it is a comedy, and it was funny!

The show starts tonight, July 9th and runs through July 14. This would be great for a date night. There are some adult sexual innuendos, which may go over the head of some children, but overall I would say this is for adults and older children/teens. I can't wait to go back to the Wells Fargo Pavillion for another Music Circus Production. There are 3 shows left this season: Guys and Dolls, The Wiz, and In The Heights

Broadway at Music Circus runs during the summer only. After that, Broadway on Tour comes alive. Normally Broadway on Tour is at the Sacramento Community Center Theatre, but this season the shows will be at Memorial Auditorium while the community center is being renovated.
